Beethoven’s Beatzz

March 4, 2009

If only....also, this may have the greatest tagline of a movie, ever.

If only....also, this may be the greatest tagline for a movie, ever.

After that phenomenal post by icebergxc, I was thinking a lot about Walter Murphy, perhaps better known as “that guy who writes the music for Family Guy and that other show from the people who brought you Family Guy, American Dad, which I never watched but is apparently still on TV? What gives with that? Do people actually watch that? Man, I don’t understand American consumer trends. You realize people still buy Metallica albums, too?” Yep, I was thinking about that dude. And, twenty-five years before he did those shows, he made a blip on some radars with a 5-year solo career, in which he recorded other people’s music, funkified. Beethoven was one of his victims. John Williams was another. But let’s talk Beethoven.

Maybe you’ve heard of “A Fifth of Beethoven,” which has experienced “the Animal Show bump” of late, resulting in its e-biquity as a sample in innumerable mashups, including those two in icebergxc’s post. Lucky for us, Soulwax remixed its brains out, taking an already-funky song to Funky-town, and making it ride the Funkoaster until it puked its Funkel cakes out all over the other passengers. And now we can listen to it. I’m excited, are you? Just make sure your Funkel cakes are well-digested before you ride.

Wasn’t this a mislabel of a ‘Hidden Cat’ Remix… not sure if Soulwax ever did this

This is *mostly* Soulwax’s mix. The “Hidden Cat” remix you’re referring to was created on a well known remix board (I can’t tell you which one, because I don’t remember) when one of their members asked for the Soulwax edit, and was given a rip of it from Soulwax’s live mix on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show. The member who gave it (Hidden Cat) to the OP told him or her that he had taken the rip, and then extended it by about 50 seconds on both sides to try and recreate what Soulwax had done. So it’s mostly Soulwax’s remix, but was partially reconstructed by Hidden Cat, hence the version that’s floating around entitled the “Hidden Cat” remix.

I use the internet too much.

    sorry dude.

this IS the hidden cat remix.

As you can hear, the drums are taken from “SebastiAn”‘s “Greel” for this edit.

Soulwax yet did not released it (dunno y…)

heeere we go again. marquismeowmersiv is not really correct. none of this is from the pete tong rip

i wanted to play the soulwax remix out, but a copy was nowhere to be found, so I took the original track (Walter Murphy – A Fifth of Beethoven) and chopped it up in a fashion identical to the soulwax remix. i added some SebastiAn drums (from greel), and simply mimicked what i heard from various sets where 2manydjs or justice play the real thing. then i made up an ending.

this track was never meant to reach any sort of audience. i just posted it on the erol alkan forum for the folks who wanted the soulwax remix. then someone mislabeled it as the real thing and then it spread like wildfire.

I can’t take (and dont want) any creative credit for this, I just threw it together in a couple of hours one afternoon because I wanted to play something similar to the soulwax version that night. sorry for the confusion. i really regret ever making this.

This is so nifty to have ownership fleshed out right here on

Here’s a thing that may help: the Soulwax Introversy and Disco Mix that was played by Soulwax while covering air time for Rob da Bank “opens” with Walter Murphy – A Fifth Of Beethoven (Soulwax Beathoven Edit) (I say “opens” because it’s preceded by Introversy, a full hour of song intros O.o).

This bit is clearly different from the song posted in this blog entry which is now more likely than not the track regretfully (but IMHO not regrettably) made by Hidden Cat.

I invite you to listen for yourself, grab the two-hour mix at and skip to about 1:00:05, where Soulwax introduces itself and the song starts.

Then check to see the tracklist.

And for the record, I found all this while google image searching for a picture of Beethoven drunk, which I did not find.

Hidden Cat’s story totally checks out. The story I inarticulately recounted was lifted from the Erol Alkan boards (do you remember when I told you that I couldn’t tell you which board it was because I couldn’t remember? Yeah. It’s that one). So cheers to Hidden Cat coming and clearing this all up for us, in addition to providing the internet with a fucking banger.
