You Know What’s Totally Indie? Naming Your Band Something Completely Senseless

The Animal Show is a two-headed beast, a carni-herbivore (not to be confused with an omnivore), alternately feasting on ‘lectro pop/hip-hop and on indie-pop/folk/Americana/bluegrass. Illinois, the band of the day, falls into the latter of the two dinners, but we at the Show still gobble it up happily. Today I’m dropping two tracks for you. One, “Are You Coming With Me?” comes from the band’s most recent EP, The Adventures of Kid Catastrophe (Chapter 3); the other, “Alone Again,” comes from Illinois’ 2007 EP What the Hell Do I Know?, which vaulted the band into the indie spotlight.

A funny story is told around these parts of the internets about how, when Illinois was first signed to a record label, they submitted an insane 114 tracks to be released. Their label decided to come out with a series of EPs (including the Kid Catastrophe series, of which there will be six total) to give the material its due exposure. “Alone Again” has shades of TV on the Radio with bumping harmonies, as well as some Tapes ‘n Tapes (in the best way possible, of course. Think “10 Gallon Ascots”), while “Are You Coming With Me?” swirls in warbly chorus before catching fire in a falsetto chorus. I’m making it out to be more exciting/violent than it is, but hyping’s my job, man. Just catch a sampler after the break to see what I mean.

Are You Coming With Me? – Illinois

Alone Again – Illinois

Check their myspace for another gem, “An Open Door,” which I unfortunately couldn’t find DRM-free for yous guys.

Also, the band’s from Bucks County, PA. That’s why their name is senseless. Sorry.

Hey, Illinois really had a huge musical production there, 114 songs, how long had they be working on it? I’ve posted some music video clips on my blog, feel free to visit.

woo bucks county! actually there are absolutely zero interesting and/or entertaining things there…probably haven’t been since the atlantic almost parked it between pa and the jerz. however, the jer-z shore sadly decided not to join eurasia. so i guess you can’t really blame them for not naming the band bucks county.
