Sneak Peek: Bon Iver’s “Blood Bank” EP

January 2, 2009
every you say the words "Bon Iver," you are legally required to mention the cabin in which his first LP was recorded.

Did you know: every time you say the words "Bon Iver," you are legally required to mention the cabin in which his first LP was recorded.

After waking up yesterday at 4 PM and realizing that your 2009 party hat had lost all its glitter, you probably realized that the fun is all over. Now that the counted-down thrill of New Year’s Eve has passed, it’s time to hunker down for the two most miserable months of the year. Seriously, February is the single worst period of time. I don’t know if you knew this, but like 75% of all deaths occur in February. It’s a fact. And on Leap Years, I hear it totally accounts for 80% of the deaths for that year.

Luckily, you’ve got the Animal Show and our mascot, Frosted Miniguns, to pull you through these trying 59 days. I’m gonna keep your spirits high with poppy music, and then we’ll cry together with some sad music, too, so it’s not just like you’re tricking yourself into pretending you’re legitimately happy the whole time. Because it’s impossible to be happy in February. Fact.

Let’s start with a little sadness, or at least something a little slower: namely, Bon Iver.

Bon Iver is a dude who completely out-indied the competition in 07/08. He saw that flannel and vintage workboots were fixin’ to come back into style, and he totally capitalized by going out into the Wisconsin wilderness and, like, making cabin music while ice-fishing or something. His album, For Emma, Forever Ago, was pretty freakin’ sweet, and, if I hadn’t gotten it way back in ’07, I prolly woulda put it on my top 10 of 2008. Anyway, he’s about to pound record stores into the ground with his massively hipster force with a brand-spankin’-new EP, “Blood Bank.” Because I’m your legit music-cum-internet leader, I totally got this thing, like, in 2008. And it’s a 2009 release. Don’t worry — I’ll remember what its release date was when year-end-list time rolls around again. Anyway, I hafta share some of it with you, because that’s what I do.

So here are 2 of the 4 EP tracks. I gave you the first and the fourth because I read that you only need to read the first and last letter of a word to get its meaning, and I feel like that has to apply to albums too, right? These tracks show off what Blood Bank is good for — continuing For Emma’s good vibes and takin them one step further. Plus, he totally out-Autotunes Kanye in “The Woods.” Peep it:

Yep, they both worked like a charm!

Thanks for this; his For Emma, Forever Ago almost made me like Wisconsin.

      No joke.
      If there’s one thing I hate more than mountain-man-hipsters, it’s mountain-man-hipster-wannabes.
